What Is TMJ Syndrome

TMJ (Temperomandibular Joint) syndrome, including jaw joint pain, clicking and locking, is a complex disorder that responds to gentle chiropractic and cranial therapy. Portland chiropractor Dr. Strasser treats the mechanical and neurological causes of TMJ. Jaw conditions including TMJ locking, popping and pain, can be the outcome of a wide range of mechanical and neurological problems as well as chronic stress. Disturbances in the teeth can contribute to TMJ disorders.

How Do I Know If I Have TMJ Disorder?

If there is jaw pain, locking of the jaw, difficulty chewing or other significant jaw joint symptoms, an evaluation for TMJ syndrome is indicated. Occasional clicking of the jaw joint and stiffness without pain is common, especially as we age, and no treatment is necessary.

How Does Dr. Strasser Diagnose TMJ?

Dr. Strasser examines indicators in the cranium (the head) such as excessive tightness at the temporal muscles of the skull. If indicated, he will prescribe an MRI imaging studio, or an x-ray, of the TMJ. It is important that patients with jaw pain and TMJ symptoms are evaluated for neck (cervical) spinal joint restrictions, muscular tightness and imbalances in the neck and upper back.

How Is TMJ Treated?

Cranial therapy techniques are utilized by Dr. Strasser in treating TMJ disorders. Dr. Strasser combines gentle cranio-sacral (cranialsacral) techniques, traditional osteopathic craniopathy, chiropractic craniopathy, and European techniques to directly impact the mechanics of the TMJ joint including the TMJ disc. This integrated cranial therapy addresses the relationship between the upper cervical spine and the dynamics of the cranial region including the jaw.

Dr. Strasser has over 20 years of experience helping patients with TMJ and jaw conditions. He is always available to answer questions you may have regarding TMJ disorders.
